Although I hated windows 8.1 in comparison with windows 7, I had decided that I would leave the computer on 8.1, rather than updating to windows 10 that was offered when setting up the laptop. However, this idea was short-lived unfortunately, as when I tried to use the safe money feature on my antivirus today, it said I had to update windows in order for it to work. I pressed the update button, only to find that the update was not an update of windows 8.1, but actually to update to windows 10.

I will be fuming if this renders my printer obsolete, as it was fine before the update, & also I have 2 boxes of printer ink in hand, so that will be another £40 or so down the drain.
